The FIFA10 finals! I have been waiting for it. I set my Sunday aside to just watch the finals. I planned to be at my friend’s place who has a big LCD TV and have a big FOOTBALL FINALS PARTY! What happened instead, was a far cry from my Utopian finals party! Instead it turned into a different one, that was lot more fun filled! As usual on Friday night Q and I start making amorphous plans for travel, but plans don’t crystallize. Saturday becomes a lazy day and now it is is Sat night.
Me: So are you ready to hit the road?
Q : I am waiting to hear from my friend, she hasn’t replied yet.
Me: Your friend? What friend? Where is your friend?
Q : Well my friend from high school is at a campsite working and wants to meet up. She has a day off. She is about 180miles away.
Me: (Raising an eyebrow) How do you plan to get there?
Q : In your car.
Me: (does a double take) Eh? You assumed that I would be totally up for it?
Q : (with a big ass sheepish smile) Yeah.
Me : Grrrrrr! Alright since I am a totally nice and awesome person (God: cough, cough Buuuullllllshiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt) me ignores God) fine we will go as long as we get to watch the final.
Q : Ok, I also need to take pics in the morning for the photography class. I will be up by 5.00am, go to downtown and then we hit the road.
Me: Very skeptical, it is 1.00am now and you are gonna be up by 5.00am to go to downtown?.
Q : Yes
Time flies …..
5.00am (no one is awake)
6.00am (no one is awake)
Time files ….
9.59am (me stirs and walks into the living room) (Q is awake and is in the living room )
Me yells at Q! Scramble scramble, scramble 10.30am we are on the road! This trip is different. Q is learning to drive my car. Over the next 3 hrs Q gets a lot of driving instructions. I can picture B laughing at this scene! An hour before getting to the campsite, I make reservations at sports bar 30mins away from the campsite.
2.00pm We make it at the agreed time. Q’s friend is no where to be found. Quick running/driving around the camp site, we finally find her and she is ready to go. Clock is ticking, it is 2.15pm.
We are late. Can’t make it to the sports bar! Plans change, Q’s friend recommends a local bar. Okay’s that were we heading in there. Unknown to us, Q’s friend, invites her friend. Awesome!!!. Tick tock, tick tock! It is 2.25pm. We are mad late. No we don’t want to watch the first half at the campsite, we didn’t want to be riotous at quite campsite.
Scramble, scramble, Q drives out of the campsite, lets just says, a little excited, I yell slow down and he doesn’t, lo and behold a jeep appears in the opposite side, Q swerves on the grass, the girls in the back yell and I go OH SHITT!. Next second, we are safe and coasting down to the local bar. We missed 10mins of the game, but then on it was fun. The LCD tv was far from a crystal crispy image, the food was terrible. There was this one other guy who didn’t know anything about soccer, joined in our conversations and was enjoying the game too. Later a family with their kids joined in to watch the game as well. The bar doubled as a local restaurant as well.
Q was rooting for Holland and me for Spain. Q got taunted for every yellow card Holland got. We sat back chatted, yelled, groaned at the misses, the fouls and went into the tensed moments of the last 30mins. The game started to resemble strangely like the previous world cup, one team gets a red card and lo and behold the other team wins. Yes SPAIN scores and wins!
If you have watched the commentator on Univision then you know that he rents out a 2 min long GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLlll cry. That’s what I did. Q was stunned, speechless, rooted to the spot and expressionless. GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL.. He tried some feeble defenses, but GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLL was drowning out his voice out! LOL
We got of out the bar. It turns out there is a water fall near by and we head there. A quick 0.75 mile hike. The girls were running late. They needed to get back to their duties at the campsite. The waterfall was nice. I wish we had more time to stop here. A few quick photographs and we are our of there. This time, no scramble scramble, we coast in peacefully into the camp. We stay for dinner, walk around with Q’s friend and listening to her stories. 8.30pm we hit the road again and 3 hrs later we are home sweet home.
This was way better than sitting at a friend’s place and enjoying the game. Anyone who knows me, knows that these kind of weekends are a far cry from my usual weekends that were filled with work few months ago. It is good to cut back and relax and do random traveling.
